Member of the Bitcoin blackmailer convicted by Dark Overlord

A member of the hacker group The Dark Overlord was sentenced to several years in prison and a heavy fine in the USA.

The hacker group The Dark Overlord last caused a stir last year when they offered allegedly explosive documents on the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center against Bitcoin

Allegedly, the documents – including e-mail correspondence from insurance companies – were supposed to put the attacks in a new light. The Bitcoin Up hacker collective threatened the companies involved with the gradual publication of the documents if they did not shell out between 10,000 and two million US dollars. Now one member of the collective – a 39-year-old British man from Northhamptonshire – has been sentenced to prison and payment of damages in the United States.

Nathan W. had been in the custody of the UK law enforcement agencies since 2017. He was extradited to the US at the end of 2019. He is accused of serious identity theft and fraud.

Nathan W. [name abbreviated by editor] used his technical skills to hunt down Americans‘ private information and exploited the sensitive nature of their medical and financial records to his personal gain.

The defendant confessed

He supported The Dark Overlord by managing VPN accounts, communications and payments for the collective. The 39-year-old also admitted that he wrote extortionate messages to the victims.

Dapper Labs have started their Flow Blockchain Token Sale. Some of the world’s best developers and big brands are already on board including (NBA TOP SHOT, UBISOFT, WARNER MUSIC GRUOP).

The US Department of Justice makes no secret of the fact that they wanted to make an example of Nathan W.

“Today’s guilty guilty plea and verdict demonstrate the [US Department of Justice ]’s commitment to ensuring that hackers who attempt to gain access to American privacy by illegally compromising their privacy are found and held accountable wherever they are are located.“

The penalty for the Bitcoin extortionist is correspondingly high. The member of Dark Overlord who has been caught so far is sentenced to five years in prison. In addition, there is a compensation payment of over 1.5 million US dollars.

The responsible public prosecutor is impressed by the work of the investigators and the courage of those affected:

The Dark Overlord has harassed countless employers across the United States, many of them repeated, the US attorney said. I am grateful to the victims who came forward despite threats, as well as the prosecutors and agents who first caught and punished a member of the Dark Overlord in the United States,
